Wood alphabet wine charms

I’m kind of a sucker for alphabet wine charms. I have two different sets already…and I will just need to make a set of these handmade wood ones to add to the lot. I can never have enough typography paraphernalia in my house. You would think I’m a designer or something. ;)

Other wine charms

I admit, I didn’t set out to make a set of these for myself. They are meant to be favors for my good friend’s 40th birthday party. Each guest will get a charm with their first initial to take home after the night of tasting glorious wines.

With a little patience, these are really easy to do. Note to self…don’t do wood burning on a plastic tablecloth. I now have a permanent die cut “J” in mine. :) Serious CRAFT FAIL. Thank goodness it didn’t go through to the table!

Step 1:

If you are making one letter for each guest, make sure you have one wooden circle for each letter you need. If you are burning the alphabet, then you will need 26 wooden circles, plus a few extras for when things go wrong.

Tip: I bought 1″ and 1.5″ wood circles online and realized that the 1.5″ circles are gigantic on a wine glass. I’ve now filed those away for a future craft. I also could have sourced out the wire clasps in smaller quantities, but I was in a pinch. So now I have a few hundred of these. Wine charm party anyone?

Drill a hole approx .125″ away from the top edge of the circle.

Note: out of 40 circles, I had one split during drilling. The closer you get to the edge this might happen.

Step 1

Step 2:

Screw on your first letter and rest your burner on the stand. Now you are ready to plug in your wood burner. If your wood burner has a power dial on the cord, make sure you turn it on a medium-high to high setting.

Step 2

Step 3:

Once you have tested out the letter on a few scraps of wood you are ready to burn your first letter.  Testing it out is important because it gives you a feel for how long to hold it and how much pressure is needed for the desired effect.

Step 3

Step 4:

Use your pliers to carefully unscrew the letter from the burner. The letter will be very hot!! Once you have it removed from the burner you can screw on your next letter using the pliers.

Note: Even though your next letter isn’t hot yet it will get hot REALLY FAST once you start screwing it in. Make sure you use your pliers removing and putting on your next one. If you are unsure about handling the burner while it’s hot, you can always turn it off and let it completely cool down before removing and inserting your new letter. This of course will take added time to your process but it’s not the end of the world.

Step 4

Step 5:

Once you have all your letters burned you are ready to apply the Wood Finish. Brush a little on the front, back and sides and place it on a toothpick to dry. You can stick the toothpicks into a piece of foam to let both sides dry. Once they are all dry you can attach your wire clasp.

Step 5

Step 6:

Now you are ready to use them for your next dinner party. You can put them all in a dish for choosing or attach your charms before your guests arrive. Either way, they will be super impressed with your handiwork!

Go the extra mile and display your charms on a piece of wood. I found this old wine box top and used a few small nails to hang the charms as a display.
